Wojtek Gierlach performs Puccini's Messa di Gloria in Bergen
March 20th, 2024
Wojtek Gierlach faces two different engagements this week. After his participation, on the 22nd, in the concert organised by the Poznań Philharmonic Orchestra, at the end of this week he travels to the city of Bergen to perform Puccini's Messa di Gloria. He will be joined by tenor Stephen Chaundy in the cast of soloists. Anne Randine Øverby will conduct the Bergen Orchestra and Choir.
As is tradition at the Bergen Operakor, the concert will take place on 24 March, Palm Sunday. In addition, and coinciding with the centenary of the Italian composer's death, the Messa di Gloria, one of Puccini's first forays into vocal and choral music, has been chosen.
The Messa di Gloria (original title Messa a quattro voci) consists of the usual parts of the Mass: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei. Although it is an early work by Puccini, it shows great melodic and harmonic solidity. The music exhibits influences from the Italian operatic tradition, with purely lyrical passages, as well as sections of a sacred and majestic character.
The concert will take place on 24 March in Nykirken, Bergen.
