Bass Wojtek Gierlach participates twice in the Penderecki Festival that is taking place these days in Warsaw.
On the one hand, the Polish bass will take part in a special concert at the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra on November 24. In the program, Te Deum that the Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki composed in 1980 on the occasion of the election of Karol Józef Wojtyła as pope, thus John Paul II being the first Polish pope in history, will be heard as the main piece. In addition to this work, Symphony No. 3 "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs", Op. 36 by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki will also be performed. Both will be conducted by conductor Alexander Humala, who will lead the Orchestra of the Krakow Philharmonic and the Choir of the Karol Szymanowski Philharmonic in Krakow and, together with Wojtek Gierlach, will feature soloists Iwona Hossa, Justyna Khil, Anna Lubańska and Rafał Bartmiński.
On the other hand, the closing concert of the Festival will take place on November 26 at the Wielki Theater in Warsaw, in which Credo, also by the composer born in Dębica, will be performed. The oratorio, composed in 1998 and with text in Latin, Polish and German, was commissioned by conductor Helmuth Rilling for the Oregon Bach Festival, where it was premiered on July 11 of the same year. A recording of this work won the award for best choral performance at the 2000 Grammy Awards ceremony. For this occasion, the soloists who will be part of the cast are, in addition to Wojtek Gierlach, Natalia Rubiś, Karolina Sikora, Anna Radziejewska and Krystian Krzeszowiak. As musical director, Maciej Tworek, at the head of the Orchestra and Chorus of the Polish National Opera and will also count with the participation of the RUBINKI Children's Choir (Artur Rubinstein School of Music in Bydgoszcz).
