Resounding success of Vanessa Goikoetxea as Alcina in Seattle
October 18th, 2023
After the premiere, just four days ago, of the production of Alcina at the Seattle Opera, in which Vanessa Goikoetxea leads the cast in the title role, the first reviews have already appeared in the media, and they are excellent.
As can be read in Melinda Bargreen's text for The Seattle Times, which begins with a resounding "What a triumph", "Goikoetxea’s performance in the title role was superb; she negotiated the florid vocal lines with amazing finesse. Her voice is both rich and nimble, with powerful high notes that underscore the authority of her character. When she’s on the stage, you can’t take your eyes off her; whether she is being regal, amorous or crushed by betrayal, she commands the space as if she really were an enchantress."
In the same vein, Broadway World states in its review that "Goikoetxea created her own unique version. Her versatile voice soared, making the most of the long phrases while milking the exploitative drama of the role, and her bearing was appropriately queenly as the sorceress who wields and then loses her powers, turning people into wild beasts and more. Her vocal artistry was put to the full test in Act Two, where, required to sing almost continually, she demonstrated her ability to spin a phrase and project a crystal-clear, powerful high “C” with a beefy, full tone that filled the entire house, seemingly without any strain whatsoever."
There are still chances to enjoy Vanessa's magnificent performance as Alcina, as the next performances will take place on October 20th, 22nd, 25th and 28th at Seattle Opera.
