Pedro Halffter premieres his new work "Proteo" with Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid
24 May 2022
This evening Pedro Halffter leads the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid in the seventh program of its symphonic season.
This concert is the world premiere of the work "Proteus", composed by Pedro Halffter and inspired by the Greek deity of the sea who is able to change his own shape at will. He creates a piece that encourages the listener to be part of that ability of reinvention and adaptation to the circumstances that the world in which we currently live in requires. The concert, moreover, is a very special occasion since, as specified in the hand program, maestro Halffter only composes "when he really has something to say, when he needs to tell something". It should also be noted that the work is dedicated to Rafael Pardo, director of the BBVA Foundation.
In addition to this work, which was finished just a few weeks ago, the program is completed with two (post)romantic works. The first part will feature Camille Saint-Saëns's Concerto for Cello and Orchestra No. 1 in A minor, Op.33, with Dmitri Tsirin as soloist and, after the break, Halffter will conduct Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43 by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius.
The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Symphony Hall of the Auditorio Nacional de Música.
