Manuel Coves triumphs in London with the English National Ballet Orchestra
April 4th, 2024
Following the premiere on 27 March of Johan Inger's ballet Carmen at Sadler's Wells with the Orchestra of the English National Ballet, numerous international media, some as prominent as the Telegraph, The Guardian and The Independent, have echoed the great success of this production, whose musical direction was by maestro Manuel Coves.
Thus, we can read on the Brodwayworld website about Coves' excellent work at the head of the orchestra: "The overall musical structuring is the real deal, as so rarely does an added to, developed score do anything for the existing, historic music. But now we hear the Bizet and Shchedrin even more alive, further aided by the juxtaposition of Marc Álvarez's modern, verging on industrial sounding additional original music. All played seamlessly, and extremely well by the English National Ballet Philharmonic under the baton of guest conductor Manuel Coves".
On the other hand, the English newspaper The Standard also highlights the work done by the maestro, stating that: "The orchestrations, adding new passages to Bizet’s score, are trembling and doomy with chimes and percussion (conductor Manuel Coves and the orchestra are on great form)"
Finally, Bachtrack praises the orchestra's great response under Coves' baton: "The ENB Philharmonic, under the baton of Manuel Coves, were terrific".
There is still a chance to enjoy this production at the Sadler's Wells Theatre until 6 April.
