Manuel Coves conducts the English National Ballet Philharmonic at London's historic Sadler's Wells Theatre
March 26th, 2024
Conductor Manuel Coves makes his debut at the English National Ballet with the ballet Carmen, in the renowned version directed and choreographed by Johan Inger, Swedish dancer and choreographer.

To tackle the challenge of interpreting a music as deeply rooted as Carmen, Johan Inger chose to resignify its protagonist through the eyes of a child. This choice has given the story a twist of meaning, adding a layer of mystery that shrouds the themes of seduction and violence. In Inger's own words: "That child could be any of us, experiencing violence which, however brief, would have a permanent negative influence on our lives and on our capacity to bond with others".

This version was premiered at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in 2015 commissioned by the Compañía Nacional de Danza and, since then, maestro Coves has conducted it on numerous occasions, including at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Semperoper Dresden, Festspielhaus St. Pölten, Montecarlo Opera, Teatre Principal de Palma, Teatros del Canal or the Palacio de la Ópera in Coruña, among others.

Maestro Coves conducts the English National Ballet Philharmonic in a re-orchestrated version by Álvaro Domínguez.

Performances can be enjoyed on 27, 28 and 30 March, and 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 April at Sadler's Wells in London.
