Luiz-Ottavio Faria made his operatic debut as Tom in Un ballo in maschera alongside the legendary tenor Carlo Bergonzi, as well as Fernando Teixeira and Stefka Evstatieva, at the Theatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro and the Theatro Municipal of São Paulo, under the baton of Maestro Isaac Karabtchevsky. Since this promising debut, his prolific career in concerts and opera performances has taken him around the world, particularly throughout Europe, the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil. He achieved a triumphant debut and unanimous critical acclaim for his interpretation of Banquo in Macbeth at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, as well as for his portrayal of Marcel in Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots at Carnegie Hall with the New York City Opera Orchestra. These performances attracted international attention, earning admiration both for his powerful and majestic bass voice and for his compelling stage presence.

His extensive repertoire encompasses more than thirty roles, ranging from Seneca in L’incoronazione di Poppea to Zaccaria in Verdi’s Nabucco, and includes, among others, Ramfis and the King (Aida), Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Alvise (La Gioconda), Tom (Un ballo in maschera), Banquo (Macbeth), Ferrando (Il trovatore), Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), and Colline (La bohème).
Recognized as one of the leading American basses, Luiz-Ottavio Faria is a regular guest with major opera houses and symphony orchestras worldwide and has also been widely acclaimed for his concert performances. He has collaborated with distinguished musical and stage directors such as Franco Zeffirelli, Riccardo Frizza, José Maria Florêncio, Giancarlo del Monaco, Giuliano Carella, Robert Lyall, Roberto Abbado, Isaac Karabtchevsky, Saverio Marconi, Will Crutchfield, Enrique Bátiz, Franco Ripa di Meana, Silvio Barbato, Bia Lessa, Yoav Talmi, and Henning Brockhaus, among others. He pursued his studies at The Juilliard School and has won numerous national and international singing competitions, as well as several musical awards from professional associations and foundations.
His most notable performances include La forza del destino, I puritani, and a Lyric Gala in A Coruña; The Rake’s Progress, Die Entführung aus dem Serail, and Der fliegende Holländer at the Theatro Municipal of São Paulo; Rigoletto at the Opéra national de Montpellier; La Wally at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos; Verdi’s Requiem with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, in Manaus, and at the Theatro Municipal of São Paulo; and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Minas Gerais Symphony Orchestra.
His most recent appearances include Beethoven’s Fidelio at the Theatro Municipal of São Paulo, Porgy and Bess at the same venue, and Verdi’s Requiem in Nuremberg, Germany.
