Lianna Haroutounian heads the
cast of La bohème at
Palma's Teatre Principal

Considered one of the most promising Verdi sopranos of her generation, her outstanding qualities as a lyric spinto soprano have enabled her to tackle a wide operatic repertoire, encompassing Verdi and Puccini as well as French and Russian repertoire, in addition to an extensive chamber music repertory. 

Born in Armenia, she studied piano and singing at the Yerevan National Conservatory, where she obtained a Higher Diploma in Singing under S. Danelian, and later continued her studies in France at the Centre de Formation Lyrique of the Opéra Bastille. 

Throughout her career she has sung roles such as Elisabeth de Valois (Don Carlo) at the Royal Opera House with Antonio Pappano and Jonas Kaufmann, at the Metropolitan Opera with Yannick Nézet-Séguin, at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden under Maestro Zanetti, in Zurich conducted by Fabio Luisi, at the Verbier Festival with Daniel Harding, and at the Hamburg State Opera; Amelia (Un ballo in maschera) in Bern, Tours and at the Teatro de la Maestranza; Marguerite (Faust) at the Opéra de Massy; Amelia Grimaldi (Simon Boccanegra) at the Metropolitan Opera alongside Plácido Domingo under the direction of James Levine, at the Concertgebouw and in Tours; Mimì (La Bohème) at the Royal Opera House in the iconic John Copley production alongside Piotr Beczała under the direction of Plácido Domingo, as well as in Sydney, Tours and Las Palmas; Violetta (La Traviata) at the Sanxay Festival; Cio-Cio-San (Madama Butterfly) at the Concertgebouw under the baton of Karel Mark Chichon, at San Francisco Opera with Yves Abel and Jordi Bernàcer, at the Hamburg State Opera, Seattle Opera, the Sanxay Festival, the Vienna State Opera, the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Royal Opera House; Hélène (Les vêpres siciliennes) at the Royal Opera House with Antonio Pappano in a new production by Stefan Herheim, later released on DVD, as well as in Frankfurt, at ABAO and at the Greek National Opera in Athens (Italian version); Desdemona (Otello) at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples under the direction of Nicola Luisotti, at the Teatro Real under Renato Palumbo, in Sydney, and at ABAO with Riccardo Frizza; Tosca (Tosca) in San Francisco with Riccardo Frizza, at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia under Nicola Luisotti, in Malmö and at the Bolshoi Theatre; Leonora (Il Trovatore) at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples under Nicola Luisotti, at the Royal Opera House first with Gianandrea Noseda and later under Richard Farnes, and at the Teatro Real in Madrid; Iolanta (Iolanta) at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía and in concert version with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic conducted by Yuri Temirkanov; the title role in Adriana Lecouvreur at La Monnaie under the direction of Evelino Pidò; Nedda (I Pagliacci) and Manon Lescaut at San Francisco Opera; Fedora at the Concertgebouw; The Queen of Spades at the Gran Teatre del Liceu; and Suor Angelica and Il Tabarro at La Monnaie. 

Her concert repertoire includes Verdi’s Requiem (Teatro Real, Madrid), Rossini’s Stabat Mater and Petite Messe Solennelle, Poulenc’s Stabat Mater, Dvořák’s Stabat Mater, and Mozart’s Requiem. She has also taken part in the Verdi Gala at the Royal Opera House Muscat in collaboration with the Teatro San Carlo of Naples under the direction of Sebastian Lang-Lessing, an Opera Gala at the Annecy Festival, and numerous recitals in the United States, France, Italy, Spain and Armenia.

Among her recent and upcoming engagements are Otello at the Teatro Verdi di Trieste; Turandot at the Teatro Verdi di Salerno and with the Franz Schubert Filharmonia at the Palau de la Música Catalana; La bohème at the Teatre Principal de Palma; Adriana Lecouvreur at the Teatro Cervantes in Málaga and at the Opéra du Capitole de Toulouse; Madama Butterfly at the Teatro Regio di Torino, the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa and the Teatro Real; La Gioconda at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples; Un ballo in maschera in San Francisco; Ariadne auf Naxos at the Teatro de la Maestranza; Tosca in Seattle; and Tristan und Isolde at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie and at the Teatro Cervantes in Málaga.
