Great success of Avatar, the latest show directed by Emiliano Suárez in Garaje Lola
March 22nd, 2024
On 15 March, the show Avatar.La soprano perfecta, directed by Emiliano Suárez took place at Garaje Lola. With a characterisation identical to the film of the same name, sopranos Rocío Pérez and Ruth Terán performed excerpts from Pagliacci, La sonnambula, Turandot, Rusalka, Hamlet, Gianni Schicchi and Lucia di Lammermoor.
With this production, Emiliano highlights a dilemma arising from the rise of artificial intelligence, drawing on the conceptual closeness between the avatar, the genetically engineered, remote-controlled body used by humans in James Cameron's famous 2009 film, and the avatars created by AI. Can technology provide us with the perfect, emotive soprano voice? The show is articulated as "a reflection on how the perfection of the artificial wants to replace the emotions of the imperfect". In Emiliano's own words:
"In our hand is to be the resistance to all those who seek to replace the human with technology in disciplines where they will never be able to match us."
During the show, the search for the ideal avatar in the vocal realm is explored, aspiring to find a definitive and singular "sfogato" soprano, capable of reaching the greatest vocal extension with a wide tessitura and ease. Maria Callas is mentioned as a prime example in this regard.
The team was completed by Rosalía López on piano, lighting by Suárez himself and José Luis de la Calle, and costumes by Carola Baleztena.
After the premiere, Arturo Reverter wrote in La Razón of his impressions: "The mind of Emiliano Suárez [...] has few limits, and always with intelligence and inventiveness, he proposes very curious and thought-provoking musical-vocal themes". He also highlights the work of both sopranos "they made a great effort and came out triumphant [,,,] Good work together" and of the rest of the artistic team: "Adequate lighting by Suárez himself and José Luis de la Calle.Costumes by Carola Baleztena very faithful to those in the film"
