GABRIEL ALONSO

baritone


Born in Ferrol (A Coruña) in 1991, he graduated from the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía (BMus and PGMus) under the guidance of renowned masters Ryland Davies and Francisco Araiza.

He has received masterclasses from some of the world’s most distinguished singers, conductors, and stage directors, including Teresa Berganza, Juliane Banse, Susan Bullock, Leigh Melrose, Sarah Connolly, Ruggero Raimondi, Alberto Zedda, Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Alfonso Romero Mora, and Justin Way.

Among the awards he has received are First Prize at the Concurso de Amigos de la Ópera de Santiago de Compostela (2014), Third Prize at the Concurso Internacional de Canto Ciudad de Logroño (2019), and Third Prize at the Concurso Nacional de Canto Ciudad de Albacete (2021).

His professional career began at the Teatro Victoria Eugenia with Il barbiere di Siviglia. In subsequent years, he participated in productions at the Teatro Cervantes in Rigoletto; with Amigos de la Ópera de A Coruña in recitals, La verbena de la Paloma, La forza del destino, Roméo et Juliette, and Carmen; with Amigos de la Ópera de Vigo in recitals and Rigoletto; and at the Teatro Real in the Mozart Revolution Gala, among others.

Recent highlights include appearances at the Al Bustan Festival in La tragédie de Carmen (Escamillo) alongside Anita Rachvelishvili and Gianni Schicchi (Marco) with Bryn Terfel; at Teatro Cafam in the leading roles of Luisa Fernanda, La leyenda del beso, Carmen, and Die lustige Witwe; at the Festival de Teatro Lírico de Oviedo in La Gran Vía and Adiós a la bohemia; at Ópera de Oviedo in Rigoletto (Marullo); at ABAO Bilbao Opera in Andrea Chénier (Roucher); at Teatro de la Zarzuela in the recital Esencias Gallegas; and at the Teatre Principal de Palma in Dido and Aeneas and Oda a Santa Cecilia.

He has also performed leading roles such as Silvio in Pagliacci, Marcello and Schaunard in La bohème, Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia, and Giorgio Germont in La traviata.

His symphonic and chamber repertoire includes works such as the Requiem, Symphony No. 9, Carmina Burana, the Christmas Oratorio by Camille Saint-Saëns, as well as Kindertotenlieder and Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, among others. He has also given song and Lied recitals at the Teatro Afundación, the Richard Strauss Hall in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and Schloss Laudon in Vienna.

He has premiered numerous contemporary works, notably Dúas cantigas for baritone and orchestra by Xabier de Paz with the Real Filharmonía de Galicia. Contemporary composers such as Miquel Ortega, Juan Durán (Queen Sofía Composition Prize 2018), and Borja Mariño have also written works specifically for his voice.

He has recorded the albums Mientras se borra el mundo with pianist Aurelio Viribay, together with Mar Morán, featuring Borja Mariño’s music for voice and piano (2024), and No Camiño, bringing together two centuries of Galician song (2021).

Among his upcoming engagements are the role of Starek in Jenůfa during the A Coruña opera season, and the Chaplain in the world premiere of Las 13 rosas rojas by Cecilia Bercovich at the Teatro de la Zarzuela.
