Alejandro del Cerro, one of the most promising Spanish tenors, has just marked a milestone in his professional career by making his debut at the prestigious Zurich Opernhaus, playing the role of Lord Cecil in Roberto Devereux.
Born in Santander, he begins his piano and singing studies at the conservatory in that city, later moving to Madrid where he graduates with honors at the High School of Singing, being awarded with the Special End of Degree Prize. He obtains a scholarship from the Marcelino Botín Foundation to continue his musical studies, perfecting his technique with teachers such as Deborah Polaski, Roberto Scandiuzzi and Teresa Berganza, among others.
Awarded in various competitions, he makes his stage debut with Sorozábal's zarzuela Katiuska, in the role of Prince Sergio. From that moment on, his artistic career follows an upward trend, adding to his repertoire operas and zarzuelas such as Gianni Schicchi, The merry widow, Don Gil de Alcalá, Lucia di Lammermoor (Arturo) in Pamplona, his debut at Teatro de la Zarzuela in La Tempranica, La leyenda del beso, El huésped del Sevillano and once again Katiuska (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria), Macbeth (Malcolm) in Córdoba and his debut at Teatro Real in the opera I vespri siciliani, followed by further collaborations in Parsifal, La Favorita, Lucia di Lammemoor and Umberto Giordano's Siberia.
After debuting Cassio in Otello at Teatro Calderón in Valladolid, he takes on important leading roles as Lensky in Eugene Onegin (Zommeropera, Belgium) and Faust (Oviedo and Dorset Festival in UK), as well as in Marina, La tabernera del puerto, Luisa Fernanda, Los gavilanes, Entre Sevilla y Triana and Tabaré (Teatro de la Zarzuela), Cecilia Valdés (Teatro Colón de Bogotá) and Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor (Oviedo), among others. In recent years Del Cerro consolidates his professional career with his debut at Liceu de Barcelona in the role of Nearco in Poliuto, followed by Cardona in Doña Francisquita on the same stage, and especially his first leading role at Teatro Real in Donizetti's Viva la mamma. Also, he returns to Oviedo to sing the role of Laërte in Hamlet and debuts Narraboth in Salome at Auditorio de Madrid, together with the OCNE conducted by David Afkham. His most recent performances include Rufus Wainwright's opera Hadrian at the Teatro Real, a title he later repeated at the Festival de Peralada, his debut at the Teatro de la Maestranza in Roberto Devereux, his return to the Real with Tristan und Isolde and to the Zarzuela in the revival of Luisa Fernanda.
As for his symphonic repertoire, to name but a few works, he performs Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Rossini's Stabat Mater at Fundación March in Madrid and Handel's Messiah at L'Auditori in Barcelona with the OBC. He recently adds Verdi's Requiem to his list with the Orquesta de Córdoba and his debut of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León and the Joven Orquesta de Andalucía in Seville and Jerez.
His performances this season include his ABAO debut in Roméo et Juliette, and he will sing for the first time the roles of Alfredo in La Traviata in Oviedo, and Fernando in Doña Francisquita in Córdoba and Teatro de la Zarzuela, where he also sings Juan José.
Next season he returns to the Teatro Real twice, first in La vida breve / Tejas verdes and then in The Tale of Tsar Saltan, and also returns to the Teatro de la Maestranza in Carmen.
