Alejandro del Cerro, one of the most promising tenors in the country, has just reached a milestone in his professional career by debuting at the prestigious Opernhaus Zürich, performing the role of Lord Cecil in Roberto Devereux.
Born in Santander, he began his piano and singing studies at the conservatory in his hometown before moving to Madrid, where he graduated with top honors from the Escuela Superior de Canto, receiving the Special End-of-Studies Award. He obtained a scholarship from the Marcelino Botín Foundation to continue his musical studies, refining his technique with renowned teachers such as Roberto Scandiuzzi, Teresa Berganza, Montserrat Obeso, Carlos Chausson, Dolora Zajick, and Juan Lomba, among others.
Prizewinner in various competitions, he made his stage debut in the zarzuela Katiuska by Sorozábal, performing the role of Prince Sergio. From that moment, his artistic career followed an upward trajectory, expanding his repertoire to include operas and zarzuelas such as Gianni Schicchi, Die lustige Witwe, Don Gil de Alcalá, Lucia di Lammermoor (Arturo) in Pamplona, his debut at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in La tempranica, La leyenda del beso, El huésped del sevillano, and again Katiuska (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria), Macbeth (Malcolm) in Córdoba, and his debut at the Teatro Real in I vespri siciliani, followed by further collaborations in Parsifal, La Favorita, Lucia di Lammermoor, and Giordano’s Siberia.
After debuting as Cassio in Otello at the Teatro Calderón in Valladolid, he took on important leading roles such as Lensky in Eugene Onegin (Zomeropera, Belgium) and Faust (Oviedo and Dorset Festival, UK), as well as in Marina, La tabernera del puerto, Luisa Fernanda, Los gavilanes, Entre Sevilla y Triana, and Tabaré (Teatro de la Zarzuela), Cecilia Valdés (Teatro Colón de Bogotá), and Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor (Oviedo), among others.
In recent years, he has solidified his professional career with his debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona as Nearco in Poliuto, followed by his performance as Cardona in Doña Francisquita on the same stage, and, notably, his first leading role at the Teatro Real in Donizetti’s Viva la mamma.
Regarding his symphonic repertoire, he has performed works including Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Rossini’s Stabat Mater at the Fundación March in Madrid, and Handel’s Messiah at the Auditorio de Barcelona with the OBC. Recently, he added Verdi’s Requiem with the Córdoba Orchestra and Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with the Castilla y León Symphony Orchestra in Segovia and Zamora, a work he also performed with the Joven Orquesta de Andalucía in Seville and Jerez.
Among his most recent performances are Laërte in Hamlet in Oviedo, the role of Narraboth in Salome at the Auditorio de Madrid with the OCNE conducted by David Afkham, Rufus Wainwright’s Hadrian at the Teatro Real, repeated at the Peralada Festival, his debut at the Teatro de la Maestranza in Roberto Devereux, where he returned for Los gavilanes, his return to the Teatro Real in Tristan und Isolde, and to the Teatro de la Zarzuela in the revival of Luisa Fernanda. He also debuted at ABAO in Roméo et Juliette and performed Alfredo in La Traviata in Oviedo and Fernando in Doña Francisquita in Córdoba and at the Teatro de la Zarzuela, where he also sang Juan José.
Among his upcoming highlights are La vida breve / Tejas verdes and The Tale of Tsar Saltan at the Teatro Real, Carmen at the Teatro de la Maestranza, Dialogues des Carmélites at the Palacio de Festivales de Cantabria, and Madama Butterfly in Vigo, as well as Konzert Hispanski in Krakow. He began this season shining in El potosí submarino at the Teatro de la Zarzuela and La Bohème at the Teatro Principal de Burgos. He will soon perform in I Masnadieri (Teatro Real) and Jugar con fuego (Teatro de la Zarzuela).
