Leonor Bonilla plays Dircé in Medea at the Mérida Festival
June 27 of 2024
We continue to reveal the details of the next production of Medea, by Luigi Cherubini, at the Mérida Festival. On this occasion it is the turn of soprano Leonor Bonilla, who participates in said production playing the role of Dircé, daughter of Creon, king of Corinth, and who in classical mythology is known as Glauce.
Along with her, and in addition to Ángeles Blancas in the title role and Karina Demurova as Second Maiden, the cast includes Noah Stewart, Esteban Baltazar, Nancy Fabiola Herrera and Mercedes Gancedo, among others.
The proposal that opens the Mérida Festival will offer a version of Cherubini's opera that focuses on the vicarious violence suffered by the protagonist and on child and youth violence, through the presentation on stage of the children of Jason and Medea as teenagers. In the words of Paco Azorín, the staging is a reflection on “what society we want to create from the point of view of the children, victims of vicarious violence at the hands of their mother.” The performances will take place on June 27 and 29 at the Roman Theater of Mérida, within the framework of the Mérida International Classical Theater Festival.
