Leonor Bonilla, featured on the cover of Platea Magazine
June 3rd, 2025
Sevillian soprano Leonor Bonilla graces the June cover of Platea Magazine’s website with an interview in which she shares her deep connection to zarzuela—a genre that marked her entry into opera and continues to be a cornerstone of her career. On the occasion of her debut as Marola in La tabernera del puerto at the Teatro de la Zarzuela, Bonilla reflects on her artistic journey and the interpretative challenges of this iconic role.
Bonilla recalls her early days with the Compañía Sevillana de Zarzuela, where she made her debut as a choreographer and later as a singer in La verbena de la Paloma. This first encounter with zarzuela, without any prior vocal training, proved decisive in shaping her artistic vocation. Since then, she has performed major roles such as Doña Francisquita, the Duchess Carolina in Luisa Fernanda, Rosaura in Los gavilanes, and Marina, solidifying her place in the Spanish lyrical repertoire.
In the interview, Leonor highlights the vocal and dramatic complexity of Marola, a character that navigates moments of lyricism and heightened drama. She emphasizes the importance of approaching zarzuela with respect for the historical context of each work, cautioning against modern adaptations that may distort its essence. For Bonilla, every zarzuela is a reflection of the society of its time and deserves to be interpreted with authenticity.
Looking ahead, the Sevillian soprano announces her return to the Gran Teatre del Liceu as Sophie in Werther and her debut at the Teatro Regio di Torino as Blonde in Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail. She will also take part in the first edition of the Seville Opera Festival and in a concert dedicated to Mozart arias with the Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra.
