Leo Muscato is an Italian Director and play-writer. He studied Literature and Philosophy at La Sapienza University in Rome. When he was twenty years old, he started to work as an actor in the professional theatre company of Luigi De Filippo. In 1997 he moved to Milan to study Direction at the School of Dramatic Art "Paolo Grassi". His work has been subject for four thesis graduation in different Universities. He also teaches drama, acting and direction in several Master Classes. Since few years ago, he's keeping focus on exploring the four main styles of interpretation: tragedy, drama, comedy and clownerie.
In 2007 he won the A.N.C.T. PRIZE, the Press Award as Best Theatre Director. In 2013 he won the ABBIATI PRIZE, the Press Award as Best Opera Director. In 2016 he received the INTERNATIONAL OPERA AWARD – OSCAR DELLA LIRICA as Best Opera Director.
As a theatre stage director he has directed plays by Shakespeare (As You Like It, The Comedy of Errors, Romeo and Juliet), Almodóvar (All about my mother), Euripides (The Trojan Women), Chekhov (The Seagull), Ibsen (A Doll's House), Stoppard (Rosencrantz and Guildernstern are Dead) and his own work (Moliere a sua insaputa) among many others. He also directed the documentary Geometrie Anarchiche, viaggio nel territorio Piceno.
He has staged several operas such as Pagliacci and La Voix Humaine at the Circuito Lírico Lombardo, Comunale de Ferrara and F.P.S Jesi; Nabucco at Teatro Lírico di Cagliari, Ente De Carolis de Sassari, Teatro Comunale de Florencia and Teatro Lirico di Cagliari; La Fuga in Maschera in Jesi and at Teatro San Carlo di Napoli; La Bohème in Macerata and at Teatro Grande di Bescia; I Masnadieri at Teatro Regio di Parma and Bicentenario Verdiamo; L'africaine at Teatro La Fenice di Venezia; Il Campiello at the Nuovo Teatro dell'Opera di Firenze and at Teatro Verdi di Trieste; Rigoletto at Teatro dell'Opera di Roma; Dialogues des Carmélites at Teatro Petruzzelli di Bari; Le Braci at Festival Valle d'Itria Martina Franca and Teatro dell'Opera di Firenze, among others.
His recent engagements include, among others, Un ballo in maschera in Malmö, Teatro dell'Opera di Roma and Teatro San Carlo di Napoli; I Masnadieri in Parma, Busseto, ABAO and Monte-Carlo; Nabucco in Monte-Carlo and Florencia; Rigoletto at Teatro dell'Opera di Roma and Teatro San Carlo di Napoli; La bella dormente nel bosco at Teatro Lirico di Cagliari; La incoronazione di Dario at Teatro Regio di Torino; Carmen at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino; Tosca at Teatro San Carlo di Napoli; Agnese at Teatro Regio di Torino; I due Foscari at Teatro Regio di Parma and Nabucco at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and Cagliari.
