Jacques Lacombe conducts Carmen at the Teatro de la Maestranza
May 29th, 2025
150 years after the premiere of Carmen by Bizet, the Teatro de la Maestranza celebrates the occasion by bringing this iconic title to the stage, under the musical direction of Maestro Jacques Lacombe.
The Québécois conductor, who previously appeared at the Teatro de la Maestranza in 2019 with great success conducting Samson et Dalila, returns to the Seville opera house for this special occasion—the 150th anniversary of a work deeply connected to the city of Seville and one he has conducted on numerous occasions, including at venues such as the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Canadian Opera Company, Vancouver Opera, Theater Bonn, Philadelphia, and Avignon.
The cast features Mercedes Arcuri as Frasquita, with Maria Kataeva and Gabriela Flores alternating in the title role, Piero Pretti and Alejandro del Cerro as Don José, and Giuliana Gianfaldoni and María as Micaela, among others.
Stage direction and costume design are by Emilio Sagi, in this production from the Auditorio de la Diputación de Alicante (ADDA). Lacombe will lead the Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra, the Teatro de la Maestranza Chorus, and the Escolanía de Los Palacios in performances on June 13, 15, 17, and 21 at the Teatro de la Maestranza.
