Guillermo García Calvo shines with his musical direction in the new production of Der fliegende Holländer in Tenerife
3 of December of 2025
The recent staged production of Der fliegende Höllander at the Tenerife Opera House's has received rave reviews, highlighting the work of maestro Guillermo García Calvo leading the orchestra.

Platea Magazine points out that: “One of the most important contributions in this production was, without a doubt, the musical direction of Guillermo García Calvo. He delivered a brilliant and profound interpretation, without ostentation but preserving the elegance of the notes. It was a true delight to watch him conduct the symphony orchestra with such skill and care. The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra responded as usual with admirable effectiveness, doing its part to ensure the music had the necessary force throughout the two-hour concert.”

1/2 Tono Editorial highlights that: "The Flying Dutchman resounded once again in its final performance at the Concert Hall with a warm response from the audience -though without the explosion of other occasions- and a musical interpretation of great quality. From the pit, Guillermo García Calvo conducted with a confidence rarely heard in Wagner in Spain. He is the best conductor of German repertoire in our country alongside Heras-Casado. There is no debate. And he demonstrated this abundantly in Saturday’s performance. There is a clarity in his gesture that organizes the score without diminishing its momentum, and this was evident in how the orchestra breathed. The winds, especially, delivered a memorable evening: luminous, tense when necessary, and always with  precision that sustains the romantic architecture of this early work by the Leipzig composer.”
Ópera Actual emphasizes: “…under the musical direction of Guillermo García Calvo, work that proved fundamental in highlighting and making the beauty of the score shine: his baton guided the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra with precision, which responded with its usual professionalism in a repertoire, staged Wagner, in which it doesn’t usually venture.”

Pro Ópera insists that: “The musical direction was handled by Madrid-born Guillermo García Calvo, one of the best batons on the Spanish operatic scene when it comes to delving into the Wagnerian universe. Immeasurable in his masterful conducting of the magnificent Tenerife Opera Titular Choir- Intermezzo, which he elevated to unsuspected levels, overall his debut at the Tenerife Opera can be described as outstanding. Striking from the pit due to his great commitment and gestural intensity, he offered a very dynamic interpretation of the score, obtaining excellent results from the Tenerife Symphony, in its first Wagnerian venture with a staged version in its history. Worth framing, the brilliant overture with which he moved spectators with the most purely Wagnerian sound, without ever covering the solo singers, in brilliant work from the pit. Maestro García Calvo extracted all the colors and nuances from the score, from the savage tremolandi of the brass to the most lyrical passages, in constant and perfect dialogue with the stage, transforming at times into an ocean upon which the drama sailed.”
