Great success for Guillermo García Calvo conducting Der fliegende Holländer in Palma de Mallorca
26th February 2026
Guillermo García Calvo conducted Der fliegende Holländer by Richard Wagner last week at the Teatre Principal de Palma, in a production that marked a milestone for the Mallorcan theatre as its first-ever Wagner title.

His musical direction was particularly praised by the specialised press.

Ópera Actual
noted: “Guillermo García Calvo’s musical direction displayed a firm pulse and stylistic insight, confidently sustaining the Wagnerian orchestral fabric and enhancing the dramatic breadth of the score.”

In a further review, the same publication underlined: “García Calvo led the score with intensity and attention to detail, allowing the orchestra to breathe expansively and shaping the great climaxes without sacrificing tonal transparency.”

For its part, Opera World highlighted: “Guillermo García Calvo’s baton offered a solid and well-structured reading, with carefully managed dramatic tension and a remarkable balance between pit and stage.”

In a subsequent review, the same outlet added: “The maestro brought character and coherence to the musical discourse, carefully shaping dynamics and orchestral layers while sustaining the development of the work with authority.”

Doce Notas likewise observed that “Guillermo García Calvo’s musical direction was decisive for the success of the performance, standing out for its energy, clarity and theatrical sense.”

Finally, in his specialised blog, Fernando Merino wrote: “Guillermo García Calvo approached the score with maturity and firmness, crafting an intense and well-articulated reading that maintained tension from beginning to end.”
