Federico Figueroa directs Mese Mariano in Colombia
May 28th, 2025
Federico Figueroa is directing the Colombian premiere of Mese Mariano, a one-act opera by Umberto Giordano, first performed in Palermo in 1910.

Mese Mariano is a lesser-known work by Giordano, with a libretto by Salvatore di Giacomo, conceived almost as a bozzetto lirico. Set in a convent, it tells the story of Carmela, a tormented mother who visits the orphanage where she was forced to leave her child due to personal circumstances and extreme poverty. The opera addresses themes of motherhood, guilt, forgiveness, and redemption.

Federico Figueroa is not only responsible for the stage direction but also co-designed the lighting (with Jairo Carabalí) and designed the costumes (conceived with Janet López).

The cast includes Valentina Cobo, Isabel Morales, Laura Leguizamón, and Andrea Fernández, among others. Samuel Aguirre will conduct the performance, leading the Symphony Orchestra of the University of Cauca and children's choirs from the University of Cauca Conservatory and the Fundación La Scala de Popayán.

The premiere will take place on May 30 at the Teatro Municipal Guillermo Valencia in Popayán.
