Stage director, playwright and music critic. He studied Industrial Engineering, combining it with Fine Arts and Music, in his native country (Mexico). He studied graphic design and drama in Mexico City. He later studied Architecture in Madrid (Polytechnic University), as well as various art courses in other European cities. He was assistant stage director in Mexico and Mexico City, in theatre, zarzuela and opera. His first foray as a director in opera was in Mexico City, with a show based on Manuel de Falla's Siete canciones populares. He later directed plays and zarzuelas.
His debut as an opera stage director was with Lucia di Lammermoor at the Teatro Jovellanos in Gijón in 2004. Since then he has stage directed Rigoletto, Carmen, Turandot, Amahl and the night visitors, Pepita Jiménez, Cavalleria rusticana, the musical A man's a man at the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and other shows (Handel, king of baroque opera; Ferdinand VI and his musical court; A tribute to Albéniz; Mahler: an artist at the turn of the century). He has collaborated with publications in Mexico (ProÓpera), Spain (Ópera Actual, Opera World, Mundo Clásico), Argentina (Operayre) and those of the Mozart Festival of La Coruña, Teatro de la Zarzuela and Teatro Real de Madrid.
He created and directed the lyric anthologies Sumisión y sortilegios at the Teatro Municipal de Bogotá (2012), La travesía at the Gran Teatro de La Habana (2012) and the “performance” Rodin: los volúmenes del hombre en la Ciudad de México (Museo Soumaya, 2013). In 2015 he directed the Madrid premieres of two plays by Javier García-Mauriño to commemorate International Theatre Day and a new production of La traviata in Bogotá.
In 2016 he presented a new production of La bohème (Oaxaca Opera Festival) and La corte de Faraón in the Colombian capital. In 2017 he stage directed Gianni Schicchi for the Ópera Nacional de México, the zarzuela María la O in Santa Marta (Colombia), the operetta Die lustige Witwe in Bogotá and the opera Don Giovanni in Madrid. In 2018 he premiered the show Farinelli VS Carestini at the Corral de Comedias de Alcalá de Henares, the zarzuela Luisa Fernanda at the Temporada Internacional de Arte Lírico de Bogotá and an Opera Gala at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, as well as the show Monumental in Toledo (Spain), a new production of La traviata at the Teatro Municipal de Cali and premiered the lyrical-theatrical shows Bijoux lyriques and La muerte de Violeta at the Ateneo de Madrid. In 2019 he premiered the work of his authorship entitled Reina y mujer. Las tudor en ópera in Puebla (Mexico), at the Ateneo de Madrid and later at the Centro Nacional de las Artes in Mexico City.
In 2020 he staged the American premiere of the baroque zarzuela El imposible mayor en amor, le vence Amor in Dallas (Texas) and participated in the revival of the zarzuela Romance esclavo at the Festival de Ópera al Parque de Bogotá, as well as the revival of Farinelli VS Carestini at the Teatro Real de Aranjuez. He recently staged the zarzuela Cecilia Valdés in the Andorra Opera season, the opera Der Schauspieldirektor in Aranjuez and is founder and teacher at the Estudio de Zarzuela to be held in Torralba de Calatrava (Spain).
He is Artistic Director of the Festival Lírico Medinaceli (Spain) since December 2020, were he staged the zarzuela El barbero de Sevilla, and in the autumn he will stage a new production of Cecilia Valdés in Bogotá.
